To graduate with an associate or bachelor’s degree from Florida Gateway College, students must fulfill specific state requirements. Please visit the General Education section of the catalog for information about general education requirements. Below is information about the foreign language requirement for associate in arts and bachelor’s students. This section of the catalog also provides information about the civic literacy requirement for all degree-seeking students. Lastly, information about the statewide mathematics pathways for degree-seeking students appears below.
Foreign Language Requirement
Students are required to demonstrate foreign language competency before earning an associate in arts (A.A.) or bachelor’s degree. (This requirement does not apply to students enrolled in associate in science (A.S.) or associate in applied science (A.A.S.) degree programs.) Students can fulfill the foreign language requirement by completing two credits of the same foreign language or American Sign Language in high school; completing a college-level course at the elementary 2 level (meaning the second course in a sequence) in one foreign language or American Sign Language; or achieving passing scores on an assessment on the Articulation Coordinating Committee’s Credit-by-Exam Equivalencies List for the elementary 2 course.
For the high school option, a detailed high school transcript showing two earned credits in the same foreign language must be on file in the Records and Registration department. Contact Records and Registration to request a review of your high school foreign language credits.
For the college option, FGC offers the following foreign language courses:
A student whose native language is not English may demonstrate proficiency in their native language through one of the following options:
- Submitting proof of high school graduation from an institution where the language of instruction was in the native language;
- Submitting proof of college attendance for at least one year in an institution where the language of instruction was in the native language;
- Passing an FGC-approved examination.
To satisfy the foreign language requirement, all transcripts from foreign high schools or colleges must be evaluated and translated by a NACES-approved foreign credential evaluation and translation service.
FGC reserves the right to validate the foreign language competency of any student prior to awarding an associate in arts or bachelor’s degree through methods including, but not limited to, review of official transcripts, portfolio and performance reviews, competency testing, standardized testing, or other methods designed to assess the foreign language competencies outlined in state rules.

Prior to the award of an associate in arts or bachelor’s degree, students initially entering a Florida College System (FGC) in the Fall 2021 or thereafter must meet the civic literacy requirements as outlined by State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.02413.
Prior to the award of an associate in science or an associate in applied science degree, students initially entering an FCS institution in the Fall 2022 term or thereafter must meet the civic literacy requirements as outlined by State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.02413.

Statewide Mathematics Pathways
Per the requirements of Senate Bill 366 (2021), statewide mathematics pathways were created to facilitate the seamless transfer of credits, reduce excess credit hours, and ensure that degree-seeking students take the math courses needed for their future careers. Below is a list of the three statewide mathematics pathways and related courses:
- Algebra Through Calculus
- Statistical Reasoning
- Mathematical Thinking in Context
To fulfill their general education requirements, A.A. and bachelor’s students must take two math courses. A.S. and A.A.S. students must take at least one math course. Students should see an advisor for assistance with choosing the appropriate math course(s) and pathway for their program of study.
