Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Applied Science Degrees



Degree Overview

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree is the designated four-year degree for baccalaureate programs comprised of concentrated studies in the sciences, applied sciences, health sciences, or professional disciplines.  Bachelor of Science degree programs provide degree completion opportunities for students from a variety of educational backgrounds, including those who may hold the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree.

Florida Gateway College currently offers the Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Administration (BBA), Early Childhood Education (BEC), Elementary Education (BEE), and Nursing (BSN).  

The Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) degree is the designated degree for flexible baccalaureate programs that are designed to accommodate the unique demands for entry and advancement within specific workforce sectors.  BAS programs provide degree completion opportunities for students from a variety of education backgrounds, but primarily those with A.S. degrees or the equivalent.  

Florida Gateway College currently offers the Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Water Resources Management (WRM).  

Admissions Requirements

Students wishing to apply to a bachelor’s degree program should complete and submit to the FGC Admissions Office the online admission application, along with all required supporting documentation.  The application may be found on the FGC website.  

Admission to bachelor’s degree programs at FGC require the student have previously completed an associate in arts or associate in science degree from a regionally accredited college or university.  Some bachelor’s degree programs at FGC require a specific degree for program admission.  Please visit the catalog page of the baccalaureate program in which you are interested for additional information about specific admission requirements.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate with a B.S. or B.A.S. degree from FGC, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Complete the program requirements as outlined in the program section of the catalog;
  • Complete general education requirements (36 semester hours of general education classes, including 15 credit hours of general education core courses), as specified for the degree;
  • Complete foreign language competency;
  • Complete the civic literacy requirement
  • Earn a minimum of 120 credit hours or a higher number of hours as required by the degree program, with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher in all courses;
  • Complete the college residency requirement, which is a minimum of 25 percent of credits of the program at Florida Gateway College, before graduation;
  • Fulfill all financial obligations to the College.

About the Graduation Requirements

General Education Requirements

Satisfactorily complete a total of 36 credit hours in general education coursework, including one general education state core course from each of the general education subject areas.

In accordance with State Board of Education Rule 6A-14.0303, students entering a Florida College System institution in the Fall 2015 term or thereafter must complete at least one core course from each of the general education subject areas for a total of 15 credit hours prior to the award of a bachelor’s degree.  For additional information, please visit the General Education  section of the catalog.  

Foreign Language Competency

Students are required to demonstrate foreign language competency before earning and A.A. or bachelor’s degree.  For additional information, please visit the State Requirements for Degree Programs  section of the catalog.  

Civic Literacy Requirement

Prior to the award of an A.A. or bachelor’s degree, students initially entering a Florida College System (FGC) institution in the Fall 2021 term and thereafter must meet civic literacy requirements as outlined by State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.02413.  For additional information, please visit the State Requirements for Degree Programs  section of the catalog.
