MEA 0521C - Phlebotomist, MA 75 clock hours, 2.5 occupational credits (.83 lecture credit hour and 1.67 lab credit hours) Prerequisite(s): MEA 0581C with a grade of C or better. Restricted to students in the Medical Assisting Occupational Certificate Program. Required Grade: Pass with a C or better. This course is a combination course which includes both a lecture portion and a laboratory portion. In the lecture portion of this course, the student will learn the theory behind the procedures that are taught. In the laboratory portion of this course, the student will apply what he/she has learned in lecture by demonstrating specific skills/competencies. This course covers the practice of phlebotomy; quality assurance basics; ethical, legal and regulatory issues; basic medical terminology; the human body; the cardiovascular system; safety and infection control; documentation; specimen handling and transportation; blood collection equipment; preexamination/preanalytical complications; venipuncture procedures; capillary blood specimens; pediatric and geriatric procedures; and special collections.
