The Turf Equipment Program can be completed as an applied technology diploma in Turf Equipment Technology in one year or as an Associate in Science degree in Turf Equipment Management in two years.
This program trains students to repair and manage various types of golf course maintenance equipment and to manage modern golf course maintenance facilities. There is extremely high demand in the golf industry for properly trained equipment technicians.
To be officially considered for this program a student must:
- have a high school diploma or GED certificate,
- complete application to FGC,
- complete a supplemental division application, and
- score a minimum of 10 in language, reading and math on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) by the end of the program.
Students must meet these requirements by testing or by taking the appropriate course, to receive the Turf Equipment A.T.D.
Field training is an important component of this program. Once accepted into the Turf Equipment Technology Program, students must attend a 12-week on-the-job-training. This training is at selected cooperative training sites within 500 miles of the campus. Students earn course credit for the field training and wages are paid by their employer. Students must be capable of being self-sufficient during this period.
The Turf Equipment Technology Program is physically and mentally challenging. All students should be aware of the vigorous nature of this program. Prior golf course maintenance experience is desirable and is taken into consideration when selecting students for the program. This is not a limited access program; however, a student should apply early to have the best opportunity for acceptance.
Each student is required to construct a class schedule with the assistance of a program advisor, who must approve all course alternatives.
