The Phlebotomy portion of the PCT program prepares a student for employment as a phlebotomist. A phlebotomist obtains blood by venipuncture or skin puncture and is an integral part of a clinical laboratory. This course is a combination of classroom instruction and six weeks in the clinical setting, scheduled over a 16-week period. This program is normally offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Admission Process Prior to Admission - Complete a Florida Gateway College application. Applications are available from the Admissions Office, (386) 754-4287.
- Complete the Patient Care Technician Program Application and return it to the advisor in Nursing and Health Sciences, Building 103, even if only taking the Phlebotomy portion.
Prior to starting courses for PCT: - Students who have completed the steps above will be required to complete the clinical eligibility requirements listed in the PCT application booklet.
- Drug and alcohol screening: Students must test negative on urinalysis for controlled substances of amphetamines, cannabinoids, cocaine, opiates, and PCP. Instructions for the testing will be given at the beginning of HCP 0001C .
- Students must complete an in-depth background screen, physical examination, immunizations or appropriate lab studies, and
- Provide copy of accident and health/hospitalization insurance.
A student who completes the program is eligible to take the national certification examination through the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians. Required Courses: 240 clock hours, 8 occupational credits
