Corequisite(s): CHM 2210L . Topics include: classes of organic compounds, hydrocarbons, halogen compounds, oxygen compounds, nitrogen compounds, theoretical considerations in atomic and
molecular structure, resonance concept of structure and its consequences, concept of aromaticity, application of the Huckel’s Rule to monocyclic systems (e.g., benzene, furan, thiophene, pyrrole, cyclopentadienyl anion, tropylium carbocation), stereochemistry, acid-base theory, Bronsted and Lewis concepts, determination of physical constants, purification of compounds, recrystallization (with adsorption and filtration), fractional distillation, steam distillation, vacuum distillation, extraction and physical organic chemistry.
