The Environmental Science Technology program is designed for individuals wishing to enter the water and wastewater field, as well as experienced water and wastewater operators seeking to advance their careers. Because of the anticipated retirements of many current workers, this industry provides excellent career opportunities in an industry vital to the public health, quality of life, and economic development of the state and the nation. In addition, to work as treatment plant operators, graduates can work for private companies, as well as government agencies. To be officially considered for this program, a student must:

  • have a high school diploma or GED certificate,
  • submit application to FGC,
  • take a placement exam as prescribed by State Board of Education Rule.

The following is a suggested sequence of required courses:

Environmental Science Technology A.S. Total 60 Credit Hours


Program Notes:


  • Water or wastewater operators with at least a C level license may qualify for up to 16 elective credits for their license after earning 15 credit hours in the program at FGC.
  • All courses, except the elective practicum, may be taken online.
  • Courses noted with an asterisk (*) are part of the Water Quality Technician College Credit Certificate.
  • Course noted with two asterisks (**) may be taken up to three times for a maximum of 12 credits.
